Ayutthaya Historical City

Ayutthaya, officially known as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, was once the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and one of the most important cities in the history of Siam. The city served as the royal capital for 417 years, from 1350 until the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767.

After a new capital was established in Thonburi, Ayutthaya did not become an abandoned city. Local residents continued to live in the area, while people who had taken refuge in surrounding forests gradually returned and rebuilt communities around the old city. The area later became known as Krung Kao, meaning the “Old Capital”.

During the early Rattanakosin period, Ayutthaya continued to play an important administrative role. Major changes took place during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, when Thailand introduced administrative reforms and the Monthon system of regional government.

In 1895, Monthon Krung Kao was established with Ayutthaya as its administrative centre. The region included several nearby cities and provinces. The administrative importance of Ayutthaya encouraged the development of roads, public services and local infrastructure, helping shape the modern city.

In 1926, the name Monthon Krung Kao was changed to Monthon Ayutthaya. After the administrative reforms following the 1932 political change, Ayutthaya became Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, the official name it continues to use today.

The preservation of Ayutthaya’s ancient temples, royal sites and archaeological remains became increasingly important during the twentieth century. Restoration projects helped protect many historic monuments and encouraged greater recognition of the city’s cultural importance.

Today, Ayutthaya Historical Park is one of Thailand’s most significant heritage destinations. The ancient city is known for its temple ruins, historic Buddha images, royal architecture and archaeological sites that reflect the power and cultural influence of the former Siamese capital.

In 1991, the Historic City of Ayutthaya was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The protected heritage area includes important archaeological sites and monuments within the historic city.
